 Helga Anna Helfrich

Mrs. Helga Anna Helfrich, age 78, of Hardy, died Monday, June 2, 2008 at her home.

Helga was born in East Prussia to Emma Selma Bendig and Karl Weinstein on March 29, 1930.  She met her future husband, Werner Helfrich, in the German Black Forrest refugee camp in 1950; in January 1955 Helga and Werner traveled to Canada and were married on February 9, 1955.  Helga and Werner along with their two children, Karen and Wilfred, moved to Michigan in 1963.  Werner passed away in 1978.

Helga worked in the automobile industry and retired from General Motors, she moved to Hardy in 1995.

Helga first attempted to obtain U.S. citizenship in 1974 but had to drop the issue due to her husband’s health, she tried again in 1987 and in 1995, but each time the people trying to help her did not follow through.  Finally with the help of her friends Helga became a United States citizen on November 15, 2006.

Helga was a member of the Hardy Church of Christ and loved to play the accordion. She could be found many days playing her accordion in front of the shops along Main Street Hardy or playing in a duo with her partner at the local senior center and nursing homes.

She is survived by One Daughter Karen Helfrich of San Bruno, California and One Son, Wilfred "Will" Helfrich of Oxford, Michigan. She is also survived by two Sisters, Gerda Lohse and Anneliese Korte both in Germany and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at the Hardy Gym at 2:00 PM Wednesday, with Rev. Charles Babb officiating.

Will and Karen, Your Mother was a delight to many of us here in Hardy. Her warm greetings and smiles made any day. She remembered our children's names and each time I saw her, she asked detailed questions about each and remembered what had been share with her on previous visits. Because my mother-in-law shared much in common (born in E. Prussia, emigrated to US in early 50's) with Helga I understood how remarkable your Mother was as an adapter, not just to this country but ultimately to this backwater town of Hardy. She will be missed.

I would like to say how saddened we feel about the loss of such a delightful person. Her enthusiasm for life was truly contagious. She always brought joy to any situation, and inspired others as well. Our children always enjoyed seeing her at church, or at Grandma Tillie's shop when she would play music on the front porch. They always enjoyed getting the little bags of cookies prepared for them by Helga at Christmastime. Her loss leaves an empty space our hearts, and we wish you the peace and comfort of the Lord during this time. The Lynn Williams Family.

Karen and Wilfred, My heart goes out to you both. I am so very fortunate to have had your mom(as another mom)in my life. She was truly an angel from heaven. I still called her and kept up with her every holiday since she left Michigan, and considered her a part of my own family. I love and miss her (as I have for so long). Helga, this is for you- I love you- More. I am praying for you both. Susie
